Hygiene Tips for a Healthier and Cleaner Menstrual Cycle

Menstruation is a fundamental biological process of the female body, so it’s unfortunate that the education around menstruation is hard to come by. Not many schools teach younger children about the biological process other than just mentioning that it’s something that happens. Most of the time children rely on their parents to teach them about the changes that will soon arrive. However, there are parents that don’t feel comfortable discussing the topic and would rather avoid it, which is its own problem within itself. Also, many young ones keep their first periods a secret to avoid any uncomfortable conversations they think might occur. Since menstruation is such a distinct step into womanhood, it’s important to give a helping hand to those who need it because it truly takes a village. Here are some hygiene tips for a healthier and cleaner menstrual cycle:

1. Choose Your Menstrual Product and Stick to It: Figure out what type of menstrual product works for you. There are a number of products to use like tampons, pads and menstrual cups. You should also figure out what works best for you and try to stick to it. Frequently changing brands can be uncomfortable because each brand is unique. Also, if you have a heavy flow try to avoid using two pads simultaneously because it can cause infections. It’s best to change frequently to feel more comfortable and prevent stains.

2. Shower Daily: Showering daily while you are on your period is crucial, it will keep you feeling fresh and keeps you clean. However, avoid using scented vaginal products because it could lead to irritation. Also, the vagina is a self-cleaning organ, so items that require spraying or washing out the vagina are not required and can disrupt your pH balance and natural bacteria. This could also lead to an infection. Instead, warm water and diluted soap will suffice.

3. Properly Discard Menstrual Products: DO NOT FLUSH MENSTRUAL PRODUCTS DOWN THE TOILET! This blocks the toilet and causes the water to back up. To avoid spreading bacteria and infections, wrap your tampons or pads before you throw them away. It also contains the smell. Make sure to wash your hands after discarding the menstrual product.

4. Choose Comfortable Underwear: Tight underwear is a no-no. Underwear that is too tight can lead to infections. Clean, breathable cotton underwear is usually the way to go. Make sure to regularly change them, especially if you’ve leaked or stained them.

5. Regularly Change Your Menstrual Product: Change your menstrual products as frequently as required. Usually, tampons and pads should be changed every 4-6 hours. For menstrual cups, they should usually be emptied every 12 hours and reusable menstrual cups should be changed every 6 months if cared for properly.
